History of Mining in the Congo

A century of mineral wealth: from colonial copper to the global cobalt and lithium revolution.

Mining in the Democratic Republic of Congo

The Democratic Republic of Congo has been a global mining powerhouse for over a century. From the colonial-era exploitation of copper and uranium to the modern cobalt and lithium boom driven by the electric vehicle revolution, the DRC's mineral wealth has shaped world history. Today, the country produces approximately 70% of the world's cobalt and is emerging as a major lithium source, making it central to the global energy transition.

    1906

    Union Miniere du Haut-Katanga Founded

Belgian colonial mining company Union Miniere du Haut-Katanga (UMHK) established to exploit copper deposits in the Copperbelt region of Katanga province.

    1911

    First Industrial Copper Production

UMHK begins industrial-scale copper production at the Etoile du Congo mine, marking the start of large-scale mining in the Belgian Congo.

    1920s

    Diamond Mining Expansion

Societe Internationale Forestiere et Miniere du Congo (Forminiere) expands diamond mining in Kasai province, making Belgian Congo a major global diamond producer.

    1945

    Uranium for the Manhattan Project

Congolese uranium from the Shinkolobwe mine in Katanga was used in the atomic bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, highlighting the DRC's strategic mineral importance.

    1960

    Independence and Nationalization Debate

The Democratic Republic of Congo gains independence from Belgium. The Katanga secession crisis (1960-1963) is partly driven by control over mining resources.

    1966

    Gecamines Established

La Generale des Carrieres et des Mines (Gecamines) created as the state-owned mining company after nationalization of UMHK assets.

    1970s

    Peak Copper Production

Gecamines reaches peak copper production of approximately 500,000 metric tons per year, making Zaire (as the country was then known) one of the world's top copper producers.

    1980s-1990s

    Mining Sector Decline

Economic mismanagement, political instability, and infrastructure decay lead to dramatic decline in mining output. Gecamines production falls below 30,000 metric tons of copper.

    2002

    New Mining Code Enacted

The DRC enacts a new Mining Code to attract foreign investment, offering tax incentives and clearer regulatory frameworks for mining operations.

    2006

    Foreign Investment Returns

Major international mining companies begin investing in DRC copper and cobalt projects, including Freeport-McMoRan at Tenke Fungurume and First Quantum at Frontier/Lonshi.

    2010

    Dodd-Frank Conflict Minerals

The US Dodd-Frank Act Section 1502 requires companies to disclose use of conflict minerals (tin, tantalum, tungsten, gold) from the DRC, driving responsible sourcing initiatives.

    2016

    Cobalt Boom Begins

Surging demand for cobalt from the electric vehicle industry drives massive investment interest in DRC cobalt mining. China Molybdenum acquires Tenke Fungurume for $2.65 billion.

    2018

    Mining Code Revised

The DRC revises its Mining Code, increasing royalty rates (cobalt classified as a strategic mineral at 10% royalty), state participation, and community development requirements.

    2021

    Kamoa-Kakula Begins Production

Ivanhoe Mines' Kamoa-Kakula copper complex begins production, becoming one of the highest-grade major copper mines in the world.

    2023

    Lithium Discovery at Manono

AVZ Minerals confirms the Manono lithium project as one of the world's largest hard-rock lithium deposits, attracting global attention to DRC lithium potential.

    2024

    CongoConnect360 Founded

CongoConnect360 launches as a global investment intelligence platform, connecting international investors with verified mining, infrastructure, and energy opportunities in the DRC.

    2025

    Mining Code Amendments

Further amendments to the Mining Code strengthen environmental protections, community benefit requirements, and transparency provisions for mining operations.

    2026

    Record Mineral Production

The DRC achieves record copper production exceeding 2.5 million metric tons and cobalt production exceeding 130,000 metric tons, cementing its position as the world's critical mineral supplier.
